Driver Stopped In Roadway Garners Drug Charge

A Saint Joseph man garnered drug charges during the weekend after officers on patrol found his vehicle stopped in a roadway, creating a hazard for other drivers.

According to a press release issued Tuesday by Saint Joseph Police Chief Adam Brewer, officers with his department were on patrol Saturday evening when they noticed a stationary vehicle on McIntyre Road with the headlights shining into oncoming traffic.

Officers report they shined a spotlight at the vehicle and discovered a female was leaning in the window, speaking with the male driver. Officers then parked and approached the vehicle, discovering a newly discarded beer lying next to the car.

When questioned, officers report driver Calvin Donald Arnold, age 59, admitted he had thrown the beer from the vehicle. He subsequently consented to a search of the car.

During the ensuing search officers report finding cellophane packet that contained eight white tables identified as hydrocodone. Arnold, officers report, could provide no prescription for the drug.

Arnold was subsequently placed under arrest on charges of possession of a Schedule III controlled substance and transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center. He was also issued citations for various traffic violations.

Arnold is scheduled for an initial appearance in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on September 20, 2011.
