Edwards Oil Company Driver Killed In Early Morning Crash In Franklin

A longtime driver for Edwards Oil Company in Lawrenceburg died in a crash that occurred in Franklin early Friday morning.

According to officials with the Franklin Police Department, the single vehicle crash occurred around 3:40 a.m. on Interstate 65 at the Peytonsville Road exit.

The driver of the tanker truck, Billy Ray Bobo, 67, of Columbia, was southbound, carrying gasoline when it struck a support column on the overpass. The impact resulted in a large explosion and subsequent fire that burned for hours.

Officials with the Franklin Police Department said that it appeared the driver was traveling at interstate speeds at the time of the impact.

Both the bridge that was struck and a new overpass bridge that was under construction sustained structural damage due to the crash. Tennessee Department of Transportation crews worked during the weekend to remove both bridges.

They said that Peytonsville Road may be closed for months while they are reconstructed.
