East 64 Speed Limit Increased Within City Limits

Local lawmakers have voted to approve the increase of the speed limit along U.S. Highway 64/East Gaines Street, within the eastern city limits of Lawrenceburg.

The change was approved during a meeting of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council Thursday morning.

Council members voted to approve on first reading an ordinance calling for the increase of the speed limit from 35 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour, from Springer Road to the city limits. The only exception noted is a 600 foot section at the Annie Rooney Drive intersection, considered to be a hazardous driving area.

The speed limit along that stretch of roadway had been 45 mph in years past. At the urging of area residents members of the city’s commission voted around ten years ago, however, to lower the speed limit to 35 following a crash that claimed the life of a local teen.

The change was made under the administration of former Mayor Clayton Ezell. The signage in that area, however, was never changed, therefore it had never been enforced. When the proper signage was installed recently, officials received calls from concerned citizens and began checking into the matter once again.

The ordinance must be approved on a second reading before becoming effective. It will likely come up for a vote during the council’s August 27, 2009, meeting.
