Shooting Accident Claims Life Of Brentwood Man

A shooting incident that occurred in the Leoma area late Tuesday has claimed the life of a Brentwood man.

The incident, which appears to be a freak accident, occurred in a wooded area off Old Florence Pulaski Road.

Officials with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department report that they received notification of the shooting around 8:30 Tuesday evening. A friend reportedly found that Gary Wayne Smith, age 52, had been shot while in a tree stand, hunting coyotes.

Officials indicate that Smith had told his wife he was going hunting and would be back at their Brentwood home later in the day. When he failed to return she asked his friend to check on his wellbeing. The friend then made the discovery and notified emergency personnel.

Sheriff’s department officials report that a rifle was found on the ground beneath Smith’s tree stand that had apparently fallen from above.

Members of the High Angle Rescue Team were summoned to extricate Smith from the tree stand. Coroner Larry Glass reported the single round appeared to have struck Smith in the back, exiting through his chest.

Smith’s body was dispatched to Nashville for autopsy. Although officials indicate there is no reason to suspect foul play, the investigation into the death is continuing at the current time.
