Experts Advise Caution In Extreme Heat

Officials with the National Weather Service are urging individuals to exercise caution and good judgment when conducting outdoor activities in the extreme heat this week.

With the temperatures forecast to hit the upper 90s this week, and the heat index the low 100s, residents are reminded to call or stop by and check on elderly neighbors and relatives. Heat-related injuries are a source of considerable concern any time temperatures soar close to the 110 mark.

Residents are advised to limit all outdoor activities, venturing into the heat ONLY in the coolest portions of the day – early morning and late evening. Always drink an adequate amount of water and take care when eating metabolism-increasing foods. Eliminate all strenuous outdoor activities, resuming when temperatures decline. If you must be outdoors, take frequent breaks from activities. In addition, experts recommend that residents, if at all possible, remain indoors in an air conditioned environment.
