Domestic Violence Victim Strikes Back

A victim of an instance of domestic violence turned the tables during the weekend, striking back at her attacker.

According to reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies were dispatched to intervene in the situation at 154 Sweet Gum Lane in Summertown. The female resident, age 40, told deputies that her boyfriend, 38, had been drinking and became angry about a text message, prompting the assault.

The victim reported that she had been sleeping in a bedroom when the boyfriend began to push her around on the bed then held a pillow over her face to smother her screams.

The victim told deputies that her boyfriend slung her off the bed into the closet. When she attempted to dart around him, she said he grabbed a hammer and began striking her on the wrist. He then pushed her to the floor and began punching her in the face.

While he had her pinned to the floor, the victim said she was able to get her hands on the hammer and used it to strike her assailant in the groin area. When he fell to the floor, she reports that she grabbed him by the hair of his head and dragged him out the back door. All the while, she said he continued to make verbal threats to kill her and her son and burn the house down with them inside. She told deputies that he did not leave until she threatened to get a gun and kill him. He left, she said, walking across a field at the rear of the house.

The matter remains under investigation currently by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
