Employer Reports Clerk Stole Funds By Issuing Fake "Refunds"

A local market owner requested that an investigation be started last week after finding that an employee had been stealing from the cash register under the ruse of giving "refunds."

Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies responded to Buffalo Road Market where the owner reported that she had discovered a cash shortage the previous week. She said that at that time only one employee was working.

The owner began to check video surveillance and discovered other, similar incidents. She said that when she confronted the clerk she admitted to stealing $200. She told deputies that this was only a portion of the money that was stolen.

The complainant reported that video surveillance had captured several incidents during which the employee issued fake refunds. The woman could also be seen going to the office area to "make change," then placing part of the money into her pocket.

The owner indicated that the employee had accumulated a bill by charging food items and a cell phone. She said the employee had been paying the bill by this means, as well.

Altogether, the owner estimated that the employee had stolen at least $800. She said that the woman's employment had been terminated.

Investigation in the matter is currently on-going. Charges are expected to be forthcoming.
