Arrest Made When Kids Are Left Home Alone

A man paid to babysit six children Sunday was arrested after reportedly leaving the youngsters unsupervised.

Chad Daniel Odem, age 32, of 310 Hoover Street, was arrested on six counts of child neglect as well as one count of domestic assault.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that Odem had been paid to stay with six children, ages 18 months, 7, 10, 11, 11, and 12 at a home on Busby Road in Loretto.

The mother of four of the children told deputies that she had paid Odem to stay with the children while she went with some friends to Florence, Alabama.

While she was there, she said her daughter called to ask when she would be home. She told her mother that Odem had left about an hour before.”

After she arrived home the mother said that she went to confront Odem at a home on Smith Avenue. She told deputies that they became engaged in an argument during which Odem struck her in the face several times.

Odem was incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center under a bond of $15,000. He has been scheduled a preliminary appearance in general sessions court on September 17, 2013.
