Five Points Post Office Among Those Considered For Closure/Transition

Officials with the United States Postal Service announced Tuesday that the Five Points Post Office is among those being considered for closure/transition.

Post officials indicated that a study of customer needs of thousands of local post offices is being conducted in an effort to save money. Most of those under review are situated in rural areas.

Officials pointed out that just because an office is under review does not necessarily mean that it will be closed. Reviews often reveal that the post office is still needed in a community.

In many instances a “Village Post Office” is offered as a replacement option. These are located inside an existing third-party retail business and offer basic postal products and services.

Officials indicate that once a post office is selected for review, persons served by that office have a 60 day window in which to file comments.

If that office is targeted for closure the community then has the option of appealing the decision to the Postal Regulatory Commission.

The postal service receives no federal funding and operates entirely off proceeds from the sale of postage products and services.

The Postal Service currently operates around 32,000 post offices as well as 70,000 Village Post Offices.

To date the Five Points Post Office is the only local branch to come under review.
