Elderly Resident Fires Upon Would-Be Burglar

An elderly Summertown resident reported to authorities Monday that he had fired upon and chased away a would-be burglar.

The matter was investigated by deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. When they arrived at the 725 South Brace Road home, the resident, age 81, reported that after a doctor’s appointment that morning, he had returned home to take a nap in his recliner.

Around 4:00 p.m., he said he was awakened by a noise outside his house. He said that he heard a second noise at the rear of his house, retrieved his pistol and went to investigate.

When he stepped outside, the victim said he saw a white female “trying to break into his residence through a rear window.”

The resident said that the woman fled across the back yard and that he “shot at her with his pistol loaded with rat shot.”

Reports show that the victim got into his car and chased the woman around a field. He told deputies she stopped and begged him “not to call the law.” She then ran across the roadway, through a yard, and toward Brace Road.

The victim said she ran to a white SUV parked behind a neighbor’s house. She got into the vehicle with the two women inside and they left, heading toward Ethridge.

Deputies checked with hospitals in the area and were told no one had sought treatment for a gunshot wound.

Damages to the window were estimated to total $200.

The matter remains under investigation through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. Anyone who has information pertinent to the investigation is urged to contact the department at 762-3626.
