Walking Couple Endangered By Reckless Driver

A couple walking along a street in the Summertown area Saturday evening reported to law enforcement officials that a passing motorist had mocked them, then acted as if he were going to run over them, placing them in fear.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department made their way to a location on Highway 20 around 9:05 p.m. where they met with the victims. The man, age 29, reported he and his wife, age 24, who is pregnant, were walking along Church Street when they first encountered the driver. As he passed them, the couple reported the driver remarked, “That’s a good way to get hit,” then continued along the roadway.

The couple continued their walk, turning onto Black Street. When they found that a car was coming from either direction, the couple reports they stepped into a nearby yard to get out of the way. As the driver of the same vehicle, a black Dodge truck, approached them, they report that he turned toward them, crossing over into the opposite lane. Believing that the driver was going to strike them, the man reports he threw his water bottle at the truck. The driver then stopped and three men exited. They had blocked the roadway, the man said, causing the other driver to have to stop, as well.

The couple reported one of the men stated, “You just hit a $30,000 truck.”

At that point, the man said he handed his cell phone to his wife and told her to call 911. He then explained to the men that his wife was pregnant and that they had called for police intervention.

He said that the men reluctantly got back into the truck and left, making threats to return later and “settle it.”

The couple was able to get the license plate number and gave it to officers. The case has been turned over for further investigation through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
