Man Strangles Ex While Kids Sleep Inside

A Leoma man was taken into custody by law enforcement officials in the early hours Saturday after he allegedly went to the home of his ex-girlfriend, awakened her, then began to strangle her, all while five children slept inside the home.

According to reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to the victim’s home on Windsor Drive shortly before 2:00 a.m. She reported she had been awakened when her dog began barking at someone beating on her windows and doors and ringing the doorbell repeatedly.

The victim said she answered the door to find her ex-boyfriend outside. She told deputies he grabbed her by the neck, strangled her, and dragged her into the yard. He only let go, she reported, when his brother, who had stayed inside their vehicle, told him to stop. She told deputies the pair had left in a Chevrolet Trailblazer that was occupied by an unidentified female driver.

The deputy noted that the victim had sustained visible marks to the neck “associated with strangulation.”

The incident occurred, the victim said, while her two children and her sister’s three children, slept inside.

Deputies made their to the suspect’s home at 11 Barnett Road, Leoma, where they made contact with him. He denied having assaulted the victim, stating that he had been with his brother throughout the evening, visiting their grandmother.

The suspect, twenty-one-year-old Edward Shane Olive, was placed under arrest on one count of domestic assault and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

Olive is slated to answer the charge against him through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on September 3, 2010.
