Relative Attempts To Fraudulently Obtain Prescription Refill

Authorities say indictments will be sought against a Lawrenceburg woman who allegedly attempted to obtain a refill on a relative’s prescription while claiming to be that person.

Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department were alerted to the fraud on Sunday by an employee at Walmart Pharmacy. The employee reported a woman had called, requesting a refill on a Lortab prescription for which there were no refills ordered. When she asked the woman for her date of birth, the employee said she abruptly hung up.

The employee accessed the customer file and telephoned the customer. She said that she had not been the one attempting to obtain the refill. She went to the police department to report the matter.

While there she told officers that she suspected the relative. She said that the relative had stolen some other prescription pain pills from her home that same day. Once she was finished speaking with the officers she filed a complaint regarding the earlier theft with Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Once she was contacted again, officers had the pharmacy employee tell the caller what time to pick up the prescription. They also had her signal them with a prearranged signal through the business’ PA system, when the suspect arrived.

Officers report they advised the suspect of her Miranda rights then spoke with her outside. While she at first maintained that her relative had asked her to pick up the prescription, officers say she later admitted her crime, giving both video and written statements.

The woman was not placed under arrest at that time. Officers indicate that evidence in the case will be presented to a Lawrence Count Grand Jury as they seek indictments on charges of criminal impersonation and prescription fraud.
