Soldier Is Victim Of Identity Theft

A Lawrence County soldier serving in Iraq was targeted by identity thieves in past days, resulting in hundreds of dollars in losses.

The crime was reported by the soldier’s wife on Wednesday through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman reported to deputies that her husband, age 45, possess the only debit card issued on the bank account, but that numerous purchases were made on his account in past weeks by someone in Jacksonville, Florida.

According to the wife, the purchases were made while she and her husband were in Germany, enjoying a break from his stringent duties. They were in Germany, she said, between July 2 and July 20. They discovered on July 19 that the illegal purchases had been made and quickly made a call to cancel the card..

Reports indicate that purchases totaling around $1,000 were made between July 14, and 19, at BP stations, Racetrak stations, Northern Tool, and Jacks.

According to the wife the perpetrator attempted to use the card once more after it had been canceled on the 19th, but that the transaction was not completed.

Investigation into the crime is continuing at the current time through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
