District Attorney Advises Residents To Speak With Elderly Regarding Continuing Frauds

“International scam artists are still at work in our community,” says District Attorney Mike Bottoms of the 22nd Judicial District, “and they are out to steal your money and your identity.” Often, Bottoms warns, they prey upon the elderly in our community.

Bottoms warns that many citizens of the district have been recipients of numerous emails, correspondence, and even telephone calls from these scam artists. Through the scam, the recipient is informed they have won fabulous sums of money. Many have contacted the D.A.’s office and provided copies of these correspondence and emails.

“Do not give any personal information to a stranger bearing gifts -- or respond to this type of scam at all,” warns Bottoms. “If you are tempted to give out personal information, be sure to speak with your family, an attorney, or your banker first!

“Once they have your bank information, your Social Security number, or ANY personal information, they WILL try to steal your identity,” Bottoms continues.

Bottoms points out, “The elderly are often the ones who get taken in these scams. Often they are too embarrassed to report the crime. All families should have discussions about these scams with their parents and grandparents, and contact legal or banking professionals before responding.”

Most of the scams, Bottoms says, are of international origin, making it extremely difficult to prosecute. “Citizens must be alert and vigilant to this type of fraud in order to stop the rapid growth of these scams,” he concludes.
