Traffic Stop For Texting Yields Drug Charges

An Alabama woman was issued drug charges last week after she was stopped for texting while driving.

Angela Brooke Lowery, age 32, of 65 County Road 301, Florence, was taken into custody during a traffic stop made by an officer with the Lawrenceburg Police Department.

The officer reports noticing that Lowery was texting while driving beside him. He conducted a traffic stop at the North Locust Avenue/Third Street intersection.

Reports show that Lowery appeared to be overly nervous, therefore the officer requested consent to conduct a search of the car. She denied consent and the officer awaited confirmation regarding the standing of her license and license plate.

The plate, the officer notes, had been issued for a different vehicle. Lowery was placed under arrest after the officer confirmed that her license had been suspended for failure to satisfy a previous citation.

Prior to having the vehicle towed the officer began to conduct an inventory of the contents, as is required by department policy. He reports that Lowery began to cry and admitted that there was a firearm inside the car.

While conducting a search for the firearm, the officer reported finding two pistols and a case that contained glass pipes commonly used for smoking drugs along with a burner/lighter, set of scales, numerous zip lock bags, several types of pills packaged in individual plastic bags, and a clear crystal substance that Lowery confirmed to be crystal meth.

Due to the drug activity, Lowery’s vehicle was seized along with $365 believed to be the proceeds of illegal drug sales.

Lowery was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where she was booked on charges that include two counts of illegal possession of a firearm, possession of schedule II narcotics (meth) for the purpose of resale, possession of schedule II narcotics (percocet) for the purpose of resale, possession of schedule II narcotics (adderall) for the purpose of resale, possession of schedule III narcotics (Lortab) for the purpose of resale, possession of schedule IV narcotics (alprazolam) for the purpose of resale, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving on a suspended license. She was incarcerated under a bond of $72,000.

Lowery is scheduled to answer the charges in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on August 1, 2013.
