Resident Out $2,500 After "Winning" Car

A Lawrenceburg couple was swindled out of $2,500 after receiving word that they had “won a new car” recently.

The victims, ages 86 and 71, reported the matter through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday. They indicated that two weeks before they had been contacted by telephone by a man who identified himself as “Mr. Tillman.”

The man informed the couple they had won a new car and explained that they needed to send a check for $1,550 to a North Carolina address for “processing” fees.

Once the couple had sent the check, they said they were contacted on three subsequent occasions. Twice they were told they needed to send checks for $350, and once $250.

When the couple was contacted a fifth time to send money Wednesday, they instead filed a police report.

The matter remains under investigation at the current time.
