Federal Dollars Diverted Postponing Work On Bypass

Work on the western section of the Lawrenceburg Bypass planned for construction along U.S. Highway 64, will be postponed after funding was diverted this week at the federal level.

Officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation indicate that considerable funding has been diverted from various projects planned through the department. Those funds, they indicate, have been diverted to such areas as the war effort in Iraq and recovery efforts still on-going in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The cuts will affect the portion of the bypass that will run from Robertson Road to Stribling Road. The engineering portion of the project has already been completed, as has right of way acquisition. Additionally, some preliminary ground work has been undertaken.

Funding is still in place, however, for the eastern leg of the project. Construction on that section is slated to get underway in early 2008.
