Haslam Announces Local Parks And Recreation Fund Grants

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Environment and Conservation Commissioner Bob Martineau were in Lawrenceburg Thursday morning to announce that Parks and Recreation Fund grants have been awarded to the Cities of Lawrenceburg and Loretto for parks improvements.

The City of Lawrenceburg was awarded $101,000 that will provide major improvements at Rotary Park. The funds will be used to ensure that all facilities are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible, to improve signage, and to add security fencing.

The City of Loretto was awarded at $125,000 grant to construct a 30' by 65' swimming pool inside Loretto City Park.

"Our outdoor spaces are critical to Tennessee's incredible quality of life," Haslam said. "Recreational facilities are important not only to Tennesseans but for the many visitors tour state each year, and these grants will enhance and expand outstanding recreational projects."

The Local Park and Recreation Fund grant program was established by the General Assembly in 1991 to provide local governments with funds to purchase land for parks, natural areas, greenways, and recreational facilities.

The funds also may be used for development of trails and projects in parks, natural areas and greenways. All LPRF grants require a 50% match by the recipient.

The Governor proposed, and the General Assembly approved, re-establishing the LPRF grant program in this year's budget using a portion of the Real Estate Transfer Tax.

"From land acquisitions for new municipal parks, to renovating and improving existing facilities, these grants help expand recreational opportunities for Tennessee citizens," said Martineau. "We are excited to work with both Lawrenceburg and Loretto on these projects."

Grant recipients were selected through a scoring process with careful consideration given to the projects that met the selection criteria and expressed the greatest local recreation need.
