Resident Refuses To Relinquish Info In Attempted Scam

A resident targeted in an apparent scam last week told law enforcement officials that she had refused to give out any personal information.

The victim, age 72, reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Friday that she had received the call the previous day. She said that the male caller informed her that Medicare would soon be sending out new cards to users her age. He read her address, then asked her to identify the bank that “the card would be tied to.”

The victim said that she was suspicious of the caller and gave no information. She said that when she told him she had no way to be certain that he was actually with Medicare, he hung up.

The victim reported that she had attempted to call the number displayed on her caller ID, but that she only got a busy signal.

Investigation into the matter has been turned over to detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. Authorities continue to warn residents against giving out any type of personal, identifying information by telephone.
