Leaders Pass Act To Ease Burden Of Paying Property Taxes

Leaders with the City of Lawrenceburg took action Thursday to implement a plan that will, hopefully, ease the burden of paying annual city property taxes.

Mayor Keith Durham explained that Tennessee lawmakers recently approved legislation that allows cities with the proper accounting system in place, to accept partial payment of property taxes. Since Lawrenceburg already operates under the proper system, leaders have opted to take advantage of the change.

The ordinance will allow residents to convert the lump sum amount due annually by the last day of February, into up to four payments. Those payments will be accepted each year beginning the first Monday of October.

Passage of the ordinance will not affect the tax payment deadline. It emphasizes that just as in the past, “Any tax remaining after the first day of March will accrue interest and the entire property will be considered delinquent and may be subject to a tax lien and enforcement by tax sale or other legally authorized procedures.”

The ordinance will require a second reading before becoming effective.
