Alabama Charges Pending In Child Abuse Case

Charges are pending against a Lawrenceburg man in connection with an alleged child abuse incident that occurred Monday across the state line.

The mother of the five-year-old boy involved reported the incident to Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies shortly before 9:00 p.m. Monday. A deputy was summoned to the home of the couple involved, located on Quail Drive. There, the mother reported her live-in boyfriend had struck her son across the face, leaving marks.

The mother stated that when she arrived home from work she was met at the door by her boyfriend. He told her the incident had “been an accident,” and that he had “just lost control.”

The man, age 37, told deputies he and the child had been visiting at a home in Athens and that the youngster was running through the house. He said he told the boy to stop, but eventually lost his temper and spanked him. He indicated that the boy then wet his pants and “he just lost control and smacked him across the face.”

The man stated that he cleaned up the mess and they headed home. He indicated he “knew it was wrong after he did it” and that “he was sorry.”

The deputy took down the information, but informed the woman that she would have to file a report with the Athens Police Department since the incident took place there. Charges, he said, would be issued through that department.

The deputy notified Athens officials about the complaint, then made a Department of Children Services referral “for the safety of the kids.”

The mother expressed her intent to file a report with Alabama authorities the following morning.
