Man Selling Wheels Reports Craigs List Scam

A West Point resident reported to authorities late last week that he had apparently been targeted for a scam after listing wheels and tires for sell on Craigs List.

The victim, age 18, reported the matter to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department on Friday. He indicated he had listed a set of tires and wheels for sell on the website at a price of $1,200.

Shortly, the victim said he was contacted via email by “Julius Baggy Ray,” who claimed he was interested in purchasing the items. He indicated he would forward payment to the victim, then make arrangements to pick them up.

The victim told deputies that he received a package through Federal Express on July 6. The package contained a check in the amount of $4,210. He indicated that he contacted the buyer by email, inquiring about the amount of the check.

“Ray” then instructed him to cash the check, keep his portion, then forward the remaining funds to him. Suspicious of the deal, the victim took the check to his bank where he learned that it was counterfeit.

Two days later, the victim indicated he received a second package, this time via United Parcel Service. That package, he reported, contained an identical check.

The matter has been handed over for further investigation through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
