Inmate Injured In Escape Attempt

A Lawrence County Jail inmate sustained injuries last week when he attempted to escape while en route to another penal facility.

Officials with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department report that the incident occurred around 8:19 p.m. Tuesday in Perry County.

Corrections Officers report they were transporting twelve inmates for incarceration at the Perry County Jail when inmate Joseph Boltan Dixon, age 27, of 175 Griggs Lane, Waynesboro, kicked the window out of the van in which he was being transported.

Dixon, officers report, was handcuffed with a belly band and shackles at the time of the incident. Once he had kicked out the glass, officers report Dixon dove through the window while the van was still in motion. The incident occurred on Highway 135, approximately five miles south of the Perry County Hospital on Highway 13.

Corrections officers quickly stopped to find Dixon lying partially in the roadway. They used the van to block any on-coming traffic, then moved to assess Dixon’s condition.

The officers quickly summoned units with the Perry County Sheriff’s Department,  Perry County Ambulance Service, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol to the scene. Dixon was transported by ambulance to the nearby hospital. Officers were then informed that he would be transported by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

The corrections officers filed charges against Dixon through the Perry County Sheriff’s Department that include vandalism over $1,000 and escape.

Following medical treatment Dixon was returned to the Lawrence County Jail. Among other injuries, Dixon was said to have sustained four broken ribs.

Dixon is slated to answer the new charges through Perry County General Sessions Court on August 26, 2008.

Damages to the van were estimated to total $1,050.00.
