West Lawrence Resident Reports Suspected Identity Theft Case

A resident of western Lawrence County reported to law enforcement officials early this week that she suspected she had become the target of identity theft.

The fifty-year-old resident of Genson Road told Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies Monday that she first noticed something was afoot when she began receiving telephone calls from continuing education organizations. Representatives informed her they were calling due to the fact that she had signed up via the internet to receive enrollment information. The victim told deputies she had never signed up for anything of the sort.

On Saturday, July 5, the victim reports she received her AT&T statement, which included a $14.05 charge from “Rocket Communications.” She indicated that she quickly contacted the company, and the fee was removed and the account closed.

When deputies contacted the company they were informed that the individual who opened the account on June 19, 2008, had supplied the victim’s personal information, as well as that of her husband. The individual did, however, use an email address on the application with which the victim was not familiar.

At the present time authorities are continuing to delve into the matter.
