Three Charged When Mom Claims She Was Assaulted At Her Home

A local mother was transported to a safe haven, with her husband, daughter and son-in-law facing charges, after she reported she had been attacked at her home Wednesday.

The victim, age 52, summoned Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies to her Self Road home shortly after 10:00 p.m. She indicated that she and her husband, daughter and son-in-law had been involved in both verbal and physical altercations throughout the day.

At one point, the woman reports that her husband pushed her off the couch, grabbed her by the hair, and threw her to the ground. She said that when she went outside he attempted to run over her with a vehicle. In addition, she told deputies that he chased her about the property while trying to hit her with both a garden hoe and a shovel handle.

The victim indicated that her daughter had made threats to kill her and declared that she had “took out a hit for someone to kill her.”

During much of the altercation, the victim said her son-in-law stood around “flipping a knife blade in and out,” verbally abusing her and making threats.

The victim was transported to a safe haven while arrest warrants were obtained against her family members. Husband William Ray Garland, 63, is charged with aggravated domestic assault and domestic assault. Daughter April Caroline Sells, 28, is charged with domestic assault, and son-in-law Matthew Todd Sells, 28, is charged with aggravated domestic assault.
