Man Faces Assault Charges After Shooting Self

A Lawrenceburg man is facing charges after shooting himself in the stomach during a domestic altercation Saturday.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were summoned to the scene of the shooting at a home on Gimlet Road shortly after 7:00 p.m.

During their investigation deputies surmised that the couple had been hosting a family gathering when the dog jumped on the female resident’s leg. She subsequently kicked the dog, angering the boyfriend. Witnesses confirmed that the male resident began striking the woman with some roman candles. They moved into the house, arguing, where he obtained a .22 caliber rifle from a closet. They walked back outdoors and the man reportedly walked a short distance away, then shot himself in the stomach with the rifle.

Witnesses said no one else was threatened with the firearm.

The man was transported by ambulance to a spot where a medical helicopter landed. He was then flown to a Nashville area hospital for medical attention.

Deputies note that state warrants have been obtained, charging the man with the crime of domestic assault.
