Five Rescued During Sunday Flooding

Emergency personnel were kept busy Sunday morning, successfully rescuing five individuals whose lives had become endangered as the result of heavy rains and flooding Sunday morning.

Officials indicate that members of the Lawrence County Swift Water Rescue Team were summoned to the Loretto area around 6:00 a.m. after two people had become cut off from solid ground while camping. They report that flood waters had encompassed the couple, trapping them on a makeshift island. The couple’s tent and car had already been swept away before members of the rescue team were able to extricate them from their dilemma.

Once the pair had been plucked from their precarious perch, the team quickly moved on to assist in a second rescue effort, underway in the area of Old Jackson Highway. There, they report that the lives of three individual had been endangered when they became stranded while canoeing. The trio was brought to safety by members of the West Point Volunteer Fire Department.
