Complaint Regarding Security Measures May Have Been Ruse For Burglaries

The owner of a local storage facility reported to police officials that burglaries to several units were discovered just after a “renter” questioned the facility’s security measures.

The owner, a resident of New Mexico, filed the complaint with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department on Friday. He said that he had received a suspicious call the day before from a man who claimed to rent a storage unit.

The owner said that the man registered a complaint, saying that a television had been stolen from his unit. He said the man asked several detailed questions about the facility’s surveillance system, such as camera placement and monitoring methods.

Deputies went to the facility and found that locks on several units had been cut. Several locks were partially cut and others were missing altogether. On some units metal had been pried back in an attempt to gain access, and one unit had been left open.

Deputies spoke with one renter who said that her lock had been cut and the contents rummaged through, but that nothing appeared to be missing.

The owner told deputies he would contact the remaining victims and obtain a list of missing items.
