Man Climbs Bluff In Attempt To Avoid Policeman

A Lawrenceburg man who was arrested Wednesday evening at a local park reportedly attempted to avoid apprehension by climbing a bluff.

Lawrenceburg Police Department reports show that an officer on patrol was conducting a routine check at Hope Springs Park around 8:40 p.m. when he noticed a person was sitting on the opposite side of the creek. The man, he reports, was drinking a beer.

According to the officer he asked the man to come back across the creek to talk. He said the man refused, stating he “would go to jail.” The man was asked repeatedly to cross the creek, but opted not to comply. At one point, the officer reports, the man began climbing the side of a bluff in an attempt to escape.

The officer reports he finally told the man if he didn’t come back across the creek, “he would come across the creek after him.” It was at this point that another officer arrived on the scene. The second officer was able to convince the man to cross the creek to their location.

When the man was in close proximity and began to speak to them, officers report it was obvious to them that he was impaired. He was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

Bobby Glyn Smith, 41, of 507 Stephens Street was booked under charges of public intoxication and violation of the open container law. He is scheduled to answer the charges through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on September 3, 2010.
