Fire Consumes Summertown Home

A fire that ignited overnight Monday completely destroyed a vacant home in the Summertown area.

Reports indicate a passerby on his way home noticed that the doublewide mobile home had caught fire just before 11:00 p.m. He quickly placed a 911 call to summon help. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters with the Summertown, Henryville and Ethridge Fire Departments were subsequently dispatched to the scene.

Upon his arrival, the reporting deputy noted that the home was fully engulfed in flames and that flames were shooting from the roof at a rear corner of the structure, as well as from the front door.

Deputies spoke with the motorist who reported the fire. He stated that a couple had stopped, saying that a homeless man had been staying there on and off. He told deputies that he began to yell into the burning home, but that he got no response.

Deputies spoke with neighbors, but they were uncertain to whom the property belonged. They reported it had stood empty for the past three or four years.

After sifting through the scene in an initial investigation Wednesday, Sheriff’s Department Fire Investigator Jamie Kiddy confirmed that no one had been inside the structure.
