Insurance Benefits Decreased For Future City Hirees

A vote on the part of leaders of the City of Lawrenceburg will result in diminished benefits for future hirees as far as health insurance is concerned.

Members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Commissioners tackled the issue during their bi-monthly business meeting Thursday. Commissioners voted unanimously to approve on first reading an ordinance to amend the city’s Personnel Rules and Regulations regarding employee health insurance.

The change will mean that employees hired after July 31, 2008, will be offered a limited insurance plan, rather than the premium plan currently offered to all employees. In addition, those individuals will no longer be provided Medicare Supplement Insurance through the city upon retirement.

These changes, leaders say, will result in significant savings to the city down the road. City Administrator William McLain stated that although it is difficult to make the cuts, he felt it was necessary. “GM had to realize that they couldn’t do it, and the City of Lawrenceburg can no longer do it,” he said.

McLain emphasized, “This action will effect new hires only. It will not effect existing employees or our retirees in any way.”

Any new hiree interested in obtaining a premium insurance package may still do so, McLain said. He would just be required to pay the price for the increased coverage. “Right now for an individual,” McLain stated, “That coverage costs $400 a week.”
