Leoma Woman Faces Filing False Report Charge

A Leoma woman was arrested during the weekend after she allegedly filed a false police report, claiming she had been struck by a car.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the area of Big Oak Market on Rabbit Trail Road just before 2:00 a.m. Sunday when a “motorist” reported a woman lying off the side of the roadway, near the Old Florence-Pulaski Road intersection. Deputies report that the woman on the roadway had telephoned Crockett Hospital, reporting she had been struck by a vehicle.

Deputies converged upon the location along with members of the Lawrence County Ambulance Service and Tennessee Highway Patrol. After a brief search, they report finding the woman lying in a ditch approximately one hundred yards north of the market.

The woman told deputies she and her fiancé had been involved in an argument at their 11 Leoma Road home, and she had left on foot. She stated that while walking along Rabbit Trail Road she had been struck by a car.

Deputies noted that the woman, Angela Dawn Marler, age 18, showed no outward signs of injury, nor signs that she had been involved in an accident. They noted that Marler was still wearing her glasses and carrying a cell phone, and that her clothing was neither torn nor dirty. There was also no sign of broken glass or tire marks along the roadway.

Reports indicate Marler complained of pain to her back, then later indicated she was suffering pain in her left leg and arm, and right shoulder. She was transported by ambulance to Crockett Hospital for a more thorough evaluation.

In the meantime, deputies learned that the 911 call reporting the accident had actually been placed from Marler’s cell phone.

Deputies made their way to Crockett Hospital where they questioned Marler once again about the incident. They advised her that, should there be no medical findings to support her assertion of having been struck by a vehicle, a subpoena would be issued for her arrest “for needlessly tying up three emergency response departments.”

Afterwards, reports show Marler refused all medical treatment. She was subsequently placed under arrest on charges of filing a false police report and transported to the Lawrence County Jail. She is slated to answer the charge through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on July 12, 2010.
