Solicitation Of Donations For Public Library Not Sanctioned

Lawrence County Public Library Director Teresa Newton warns the public that recent instances of solicitation for donations on behalf of the library, have not been sanctioned by the library board.

Newton said that just before closing on Saturday, a patron who lives nearby inquired as to whether library officials had sent children out to knock on doors and ask for donations. She said that earlier a young girl had knocked on her door to ask for a donation.

After speaking with members of the board, Newton filed a police report about the matter on Monday. Later in the day, she said that another patron came in with a similar story.

“We don’t know how many people have been approached,” Newton said. Nor do they know whether more than one child is involved.

Newton said that the library does not utilize this form of fundraising. “We’re always glad to accept donations, but we will not send people out to solicit them.”

Newton warns other residents who might be approached in this manner, not to hand over money.
