Chief Hopes To Gain Three Officers Through COPS Grant

Lawrenceburg Police Chief Judy Moore is hopeful that her department will gain three new patrol officers, should the city be approved for more than $400,000 in grant funds.

Moore requested that leaders approve the grant application during a meeting of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and commissioners Thursday.

The department has applied for, and received, grant funds from the U.S. Department of Justice COPS Program in years past. This year, Moore requested that commissioners apply for grant funds totaling $412,497.00.

The four-year grant would require that the city match 25%, or $103,124.25 in funding. It would provide salary and expenses so that the department could hire three new officers, to be assigned to work solely in a “high crime area.”

Under the grant guidelines, the program would provide funding for the officers’ salaries for the first three years. The city would then be required to pay the salaries throughout the fourth year.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the application. Moore indicated that she should be notified by October, whether her department is selected to receive the funding.
