Commissioners Approve Increase In Sanitation Fees

Lawrenceburg leaders have given initial approval to a document that will provide an increase in city sanitation rates.

The ordinance, approved on first reading during a meeting Thursday, calls for an increase in rates for “refuse and trans disposal service fees for collection and removal…of refuse, garbage, and other materials.”

Lawrenceburg City Administrator William McLain explained that the increase was needed in order to bring the sanitation department “back into the black.” McLain told commissioners that, since the sanitation fund is an enterprise fund, it must “stand alone” without requiring supplemental funding from any other source. This, he said, has not been the case in the past.

The ordinance approved calls for an increase in residential garbage collection rates of $2.00 per month. Those fees will be increased from the current $8.95 per month to $10.95. It also calls for an increase of 95-cents per month for commercial customers, increasing those rates from $10 per month to $10.95.

The ordinance must gain approval on second reading before the measure becomes effective.
