Police Department Grants Will Mean Safer Conditions For Officers

Grant funds allotted to the Lawrenceburg Police Department will soon allow officials to provide safer conditions for officers.

Members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Commissioners approved two resolutions during a meeting Thursday morning, entering into grant agreements that will bring additional funds to the department.

One grant is a Department of Justice Grant in the amount of $20,400. The funds, Police Chief Judy Moore said, will be used to purchase bullet proof vests for officers. The grant requires a 50% match on the part of the city. That $10,200 has already been included in the department’s 2010-2011 budget.

The second grant, too, is a Department of Justice Grant; this one in the amount of $12,220. The second grant is a 100% match – meaning that there is no monetary match required on the part of the city.

The funds will be used to purchase video surveillance cameras for the cars of supervisory officers who currently have none. The cameras, Moore said, will mount on the dashboard of the car, but officers will be able to remove them and attach them to their shirts, thus providing greater safety during traffic stops and other operations.
