Taser Deployed During DUI Arrest

Local police officers report that a taser was deployed early Sunday morning after a DUI suspect became irate and uncooperative during an investigation.

The incident occurred shortly before 2:00 a.m. at an apartment complex on Springer Road. Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that an officer on patrol noticed that a vehicle was being operated in a reckless manner. He reports that the driver had been spinning tires and had nearly struck several parked vehicles.

When the driver, later identified as Gregory Dale Fortune, age 30, saw the officer he reports that he “jumped out of his vehicle.” He was ordered back inside for officer safety, however reports show that he failed to comply, forcing the officer to draw and activate his taser.

The officer reports that Fortune got back inside his vehicle but that he became irate when asked for his driver license. He reports that another officer arrived to provide assistance and Fortune was asked to exit the vehicle.

Reports show that when he was ordered to place his hands behind his back so that he could be cuffed, Fortune refused to comply. Eventually one of the officers deployed his taser. Fortune was then placed under arrest.

Reports indicate that officers were unable to conduct field sobriety tests, “due to him being irate.” He refused to submit to a blood test and was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center.

Because it was Fortune’s second DUI charge a warrant was obtained and he was transported to the hospital for a blood draw. He was then transported back to the detention center for incarceration.

Fortune was booked under charges of second offense DUI, violation of the implied consent law, and resisting stop, halt, frisk. He has a preliminary appearance scheduled in General Sessions Court on September 5, 2014.
