Inmate Injured In Altercation At Temporary Jail Facility

An inmate of the Lawrence County Jail sustained injuries overnight Saturday after becoming involved in an altercation with another inmate.

The call regarding an inmate down went out shortly after 11:30 p.m. Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department quickly responded to the facility, located at 2126 Baler Drive.

Deputies report that when they entered Pod 4 they found inmate Shannon Kent Atwell, age 42, of 5719 Wayland Springs Road, “lying in the middle of the floor with blood all around him.”

When they began questioning other inmates regarding who had assaulted Atwell, they report that inmate Kenard Leandre Prince, age 27, of 309 Hoover Street, stepped forward and admitted he was the one responsible.

Atwell was given medical attention for the wounds he sustained. Prince was transported to the jail facility on West Gaines Street and placed inside a 4x4 cell.

Officials indicate that Prince has been charged with the crime of aggravated assault. He is scheduled to answer the charge through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on July 13.
