Brother Killed During Four Wheeler Argument

Law enforcement officials reported Saturday morning that a Gimlet Road resident was shot and killed by his brother during an argument over a four wheeler.

According to Chief Deputy Terry Beecham with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, Dwight Durrett, 29, of 5424 Gimlet Road, was the victim of the fatal shooting.

Beecham indicated that Durrett had been involved in the argument with his brother, Larry Durrett, 31, of 898 Weakley Creek Road, at their mother’s 896 Weakley Creek Road home around 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

The elder Durrett allegedly told authorities they had become involved in an argument because Dwight had ridden a four wheeler belonging to Larry’s girlfriend and had gotten it stuck in the mud.

Larry Durrett allegedly stated he was attempting to get his brother to leave when the argument escalated and a .410 shotgun was produced. During the ensuing altercation, Beecham reports that Dwight Durrett sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest. Larry Durrett reportedly stated that he had not meant to shoot his brother, but was only trying to make him leave.

Dwight Durrett was reportedly dead by the time emergency personnel arrived on the scene. His body was dispatched to Nashville for autopsy.

Beecham indicated that alcohol had likely played a factor in the shooting.

As a result of the incident Larry Durrett was placed under arrest on one count of first degree murder and transported for incarceration at the Lawrence County Jail, where currently he is being held without bond.
