Owner Discovers Horses And Bull Slaughtered

The owner of a herd of horses returned from a weekend trip to find that more than half of them had been slaughtered, along with his bull.

According to reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department the incident occurred sometime between 2:00 p.m. Saturday and 9:00 a.m. Monday at a farm located at 321 Glendale Road, Loretto.

Owner Windel Paul Davis, who resides in Five Points, told deputies he had a total of fifteen horses and one miniature Bramah bull in the front pasture at the farm. They had been fed at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, he stated, and all were in perfect condition in the front pasture.

Reports indicate that someone opened a gate, ran the animals into a rear pasture, then shot at least six horses and the bull. One horse was unaccounted for, while five appeared to be in good condition.

The dead animals, deputies report, were strewn about the rear pasture and an adjacent corn field.

Although it appeared all had been shot, deputies report they were unable to locate any shell casings at the scene.

Davis’ loss was estimated to total $10,550.00.

The matter remains under investigation by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. Anyone who has information that might be useful to the investigation is urged to contact the department at 762-3626.
