Elderly Warned To Be On Lookout For Scam Artists

A warning has been issued to area residents, especially those of a more advanced age, to be on the lookout for scam artists who have been operating in the area -- who might even knock upon your door.

The warning was issued by Lawrenceburg Police Chief Judy Moore Tuesday morning. She indicates that the warning involves a father/son scam team who generally prey upon the elderly.

According to Moore, the pair have been identified

in scam incidents reported in the Lawrenceburg area since at least 2006. Since that time they have continued to practice their trade.

The pair is known to knock upon the door of unsuspecting residents, posing as handymen. They offer to perform odd jobs at the homes, such as tree trimming, cleaning gutters, sealing driveways or painting. The pair requests payment up front then perform little, if any, work. Once they leave the premises they never return.

The father has been identified as Tony L. Joles, 47, of 12267 Lawngate Road, Athens, Alabama. The son, who resides at the same address, is identified as Tony Newton Joles, age 18.

Moore reports that the senior Joles was identified in connection with similar scams reported in Athens in 2006. An indictment was subsequently issued against him in March of 2007 charging him with the crime of theft over $1,000. Since that time, however, authorities report they have been unable to locate Joles to serve the indictment. He is still wanted in connection with that crime.

Moore indicates that the younger Joles has been spotted in the Lawrenceburg area in recent months, continuing to run similar scams. The latest is believed to be one reported by an elderly resident of Earl Drive. At that time he was reportedly traveling in a white Chevrolet truck bearing Alabama plates.

Moore warns, “Residents should be aware that these men have been known to use intimidation to get residents to write them checks.”

Anyone who has come into contact with the Joles is urged to contact the Lawrenceburg Police Department as quickly as possible at 931-762-0450.
