Property Owner Files Complaint About Trespasser, Thief

Law enforcement officers summoned to the site of a previously burned home Sunday were informed that the owner had caught the same man trespassing and taking items from his property on two consecutive days.

Owner Otho Levere Hughes summoned deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to his property at 42 Johnson Lane, Loretto, shortly before 1:00 p.m. He reported that he had made an agreement with a specific man to perform cleanup work at the site after his home had burned down.

Hughes told deputies that he had informed the man he would be allowed onto the property on a day-to-day basis, emphasizing that the man was to call each time he came to the property to let him know he was about.

Around 11:30 Saturday morning, Hughes reported he went to the property and found that another man was there, loading items to haul away. When he inquired about the whereabouts of the man with whom he had made the arrangement, the intruder told him he had now idea where the man was.

When Hughes asked how he got onto the property with the gate locked, the intruder offered no answer. Hughes reported he told the intruder to leave his property and not return.

When he checked the property the following day, Hughes told deputies he found that the cable had been cut from the gate. He said he found the same intruder on his property once again.

By the time deputies arrived on the scene the intruder had left the premises. Deputies were, however, able to ascertain his identity.

A neighbor reported he had noticed some people about the premises on Saturday, but had not realized they were there without permission.

Investigation into the matter is currently on-going.
