City’s Drainage System Lessened Impact Of Floodwaters

Emergency Management Agency Director Joe Baxter reported to Lawrenceburg leaders Thursday that the city’s extensive drainage system served to lessen the impact of flooding in recent days.

Heavy rains and flash flooding have been pronounced during the past week, claiming the lives of two local residents. Baxter said there was an estimated $200,000 in damages to county roads and $110,000 in damages to utilities.

Although there were still areas where residents experienced degrees of flooding, Baxter said serious wide-spread flooding inside the City of Lawrenceburg was averted. The city has spent millions of dollars and untold man-hours constructing a flood control system during the past decade.

A series of water retention ponds and drainage ditches has been constructed and many drainage culverts have been replaced with larger versions in order to funnel a much greater volume of rainwater runoff through the city and into Shoal Creek.

Baxter told members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council that the retention pond on Jackson Street filled up during the first day of heavy rains, and 170 million gallons of water, “That would have ended up in Gilbreath Subdivision,” was instead funneled into Shoal Creek.

“We’ve built the backbone, now we still need to build a few ribs,” Baxter said. He explained that the bulk of the city’s flooding problem has been taken care of. Once those projects are complete, he said they will turn their attention to alleviating spot flooding.

Several road and drainage construction projects currently underway were not damaged as a result of the flooding, however the inclement weather has resulted in some delays in completion.

Baxter said that progress is being made in the replacement of a bridge on East Gaines Street that has resulted in traffic being re-routed along Pulaski Street. Once milling and paving have been completed the roadway will be re-opened. He said that the project is to be finished by June 30.
