Hohenwald Couple Arrested In Prescription Fraud Investigation

A Hohenwald couple was jailed Wednesday in connection with an on-going investigation into instances of prescription fraud.

Carol Ann Brown, 31, and husband Llewellyn Brown, 44, were arrested around 10:15 a.m. at their 122 Windcrest Drive, Hohenwald, home.

They became the subject of the investigation last month after a pharmacist at Rite Aid Pharmacy on North Locust Avenue became suspicious about a prescription call-in.

He indicated that the woman called in a prescription for Ambien for Carol Brown. Although the caller gave her telephone number verbally, the pharmacist reported it did not match the number that was showing on Caller ID. In addition, a fax number the caller gave so that they could confirm the prescription with the physician’s office, was not operational.

Brown’s husband picked up the prescription the following day and pharmacy workers were able to obtain his driver license and license plate numbers.

In following days the doctor in question reported he had seen Brown as a patient approximately one year before, but that he had written her no prescription since.

Agents report they checked with area pharmacies and discovered multiple prescriptions had been filled for Brown, all listing the same physician. All of the prescriptions were for the medications Ambien and Soma.

A check of the Controlled Substance Monitoring Report revealed that Brown had seen 14 different physicians within the past year, and had prescriptions filled at 19 different pharmacies. There were times, agents report, when she had the same medication, prescribed by different doctors, filled only a couple of days apart.

Agents obtained warrants against both Browns Wednesday morning. Joined by agents with the U.S. Marshals Service they made their way to the couple’s home. Reports show that both were arrested without incident and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

Carol Brown was booked under three counts of prescription fraud. Llewellyn Brown was jailed under one count each of prescription fraud and possession of a Schedule V narcotic for the purpose of resale.

Both Browns are slated to answer the charges against them through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on July 12, 2010.
