Resident Warns Of Possible Scam

A Leoma man who reported to law enforcement officials Tuesday that he suspected he had been targeted in a telephone fraud scheme wishes to warn area residents to be wary of similar calls.

The victim, age 71, told deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that he was contacted by telephone shortly after 4:00 p.m. The caller was said to be a male with a foreign accent. He informed the victim that he was eligible for a government grant in the amount of $6,000.

The caller asked to verify the victim’s personal information. He told deputies that the information the caller had was old information, from when he had resided in the Spring Hill area. The only thing correct, he said, was the telephone number.

The caller asked the victim to update all of his information. At that point, the victim said he told the caller he would have to call him back. He reported that the man gave him a telephone number and claims number to use.

The victim said that he was uncertain whether the call was a scam attempt, but that he wished to report the matter so that others could exercise caution.
