Inmate Charged With Vandalizing County Property

An inmate at the Lawrence County Jail garnered additional charges recently, for allegedly vandalizing the sprinkler inside his cell.

Reports filed through the sheriff’s department indicate inmates in cell C11 stopped a corrections officer shortly after 3:00 p.m. on the date of the incident, indicating there was a water problem in cell C114.

When he went to the door of the cell, the officer reports that water was running from beneath the cell door. Inmate Perry Leroy Farmer, age 31, of St. Joseph, reportedly came to the door of the cell, allowing the officer to see that he was wet.

Other officials were notified and inmates were evacuated from the affected cells to the jail’s Recreation Room. Officers then made their way into the cell and found water coming from the sprinkler head.

The alarm system had alerted the Lawrenceburg Fire Department to potential danger and units were dispatched to the scene. Members of the department checked the area, cut off the water, and repaired the sprinkler head.

Water, reports show, was cleaned up by trustees and inmates from work release. The inmates were then returned to their assigned cells at 4:38 p.m.

As a result of the incident, reports show that Farmer was charged with one count of vandalism/destruction of country property. He is scheduled to answer the charge through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on June 21, 2010.
