Resident Reports Assault At Creek

A Lawrenceburg man reported to authorities during the weekend that he had been assaulted while looking for a spot to fish.

The victim, age 64, told deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that he was driving westbound along Railroad Bed Road in West Point, approximately two miles from the Wayland Springs Road intersection, when the assault occurred.

According to the victim he was traveling very slowly, seeking a food spot to fish, when a couple began yelling at him from the area of the creek. The couple allegedly cursed at the man, instructing him to leave.

The victim told deputies he stopped and exited his vehicle, stating to the couple that he would “leave when he got ready,” and that the couple began climbing up the embankment toward him. He stated that he then retrieved a tire iron from beneath the seat in his truck in order to “protect himself.”

When the couple reached him, the victim reports that he was struck in the face with something, causing him to fall to the ground. As he lay on the ground, the man reports that his male attacker stated, “He is done for – let’s get out of here.” He said they then ran back to the creek, climbed into a green boat, and left.  He indicated that he remained still until the couple had fled.

Deputies report that the man received medical attention at the scene from members of the Iron City Fire Department, for a cut on his lip and other scratches. The keys to his truck were found beneath his truck, covered with gravel.

At the current time the matter has been turned over for continued investigation by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
