Cashier Steals By Overcharging Debit Cards

The owner of a Lawrenceburg restaurant reported to law enforcement officials Monday that he suspected an employee of stealing money from the cash register.

Steve Hester, owner of Wendy’s, 1214 North Locust Avenue, reported the incident through the Lawrenceburg Police Department. He stated that he was notified of the crimes by a customer. The woman had notified him that she had been overcharged by $20 on a purchase she made on Sunday, June 1, 2008. She indicated that she had paid for the purchase using a debit card.

Hester told officers that since he became aware of the situation he has been reviewing video surveillance from the business and has found footage showing this and one other transaction. During the second transaction the cashier had charged $55 to the customer’s debit card.

Hester reported that the employee had apparently been charging customers’ debit cards more than the amount of the purchase, then removing the difference from the cash registers so that the closing totals would balance and the crimes would go unnoticed.

Hester indicated that the perpetrator had been employed at the establishment since March.

Investigation into the matter is continuing through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
