Summertown Resident Is Found Guilty Of Child Porn Charges In Federal Court

A federal jury returned a guilty verdict last week against a Summertown resident charged in 2010 in connection with child pornography allegations.

Daniel Bruce LaDeau, age 65, was arrested at his 38 West Hannah Road home on September 3, 2010 on charges of possession of child pornography. The arrest was the result of a months-long federal investigation. Authorities alleged that LaDeau was exchanging coded letters with his younger brother, David LaDeau, explaining how to obtain child pornography via the internet. At that time David LaDeau was incarcerated at the Donald W. Wyatt Federal Detention Center in Central Falls, Rhode Island. The letters, which authorities said were “similar in nature to love letters,” were de-coded by a federal internet crimes task force.

Federal investigators questioned LaDeau in late August, 2010. They report that he “confessed to downloading child pornography, admitted he was attracted to 12 to 14 year old boys, and admitted having contact with multiple minor children...” His arrest came after forensic investigators uncovered images on his computer of children in “sexually explicit situations.”

In the wake of a three-day trial in federal court last week, the jury returned a guilty verdict against LaDeau on Thursday on a charge of conspiracy to possess child pornography.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on August 31, 2015. The conviction carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to ten years and a maximum fine of $250,000.

The case was prosecuted before Chief U.S. District Judge Kevin Sharp by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Carrie Daughtrey and Brent Hannafan. The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, the Special Investigations Unit of the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Rhode Island, and the Franklin, Tenn. Police Department.
